What it is

What we look for

Patches, lumps, ulcers or colour changes on the tongue, cheeks, gums, floor of the mouth and throat that don't heal or don't belong.

Most turn out to be harmless. Finding the ones that aren't, early, is the point.

How VELscope works

Blue light, and what glows.

VELscope shines a blue light on the tissues of the mouth. Healthy tissue and changed tissue fluoresce differently, which can highlight an area worth a closer look.

It complements the clinical examination. It does not diagnose oral cancer on its own: anything we're unsure of is followed up or referred.

How it runs

01
Visual and touch exam

We check the head, neck and every surface inside the mouth.

02
VELscope

A blue-light pass over the soft tissues, in a few minutes.

03
What we found

Usually nothing. If something needs watching, we tell you and record it.

04
Follow-up

A recheck, or a referral, when an area needs further assessment.

Worth asking

Anything else, ask us. Suitability for any treatment is confirmed at a clinical assessment.

Does it hurt?

No. It's a look and a light, nothing more.

If something shows up, do I have cancer?

Very unlikely. Many things change how tissue looks, most of them harmless. It means we look again or refer you to be sure.
